Why act now

Your Hi8 tapes are running out of time

Smaller tapes, same problem — they won't last forever.

Hi8 was Sony's compact alternative to VHS. Better picture quality, smaller tape. If you owned a camcorder in the late '80s or '90s, it was probably Hi8. All those family vacations and holidays you recorded are on tiny tapes sitting in a drawer or a box in the garage right now.

Like VHS, Hi8 is magnetic tape, and magnetic tape sheds and deteriorates over time. Hi8 is actually more fragile because the tape is thinner. It sticks, warps, and the oxide layer flakes off. After 15 to 20 years you start seeing dropouts and color shifts, and the audio cuts in and out. Heat and humidity speed that up. Mold is worse. Every year you wait, you lose a little more.

Converting Hi8 yourself is harder than VHS. You need a working Hi8 camcorder or deck, and those are getting rare and expensive. Consumer capture hardware doesn't handle the format well either. We use calibrated playback equipment designed for aging tapes, so nothing gets damaged further. After capture, we clean up the noise and grain, correct the color, and sharpen what's left. A muddy DIY transfer versus footage that actually looks like you remember it.

Frequently asked questions

Common questions about our Hi8 conversion service.

How long does Hi8 conversion take?

Most orders are completed within 2 to 3 weeks of receiving your tapes. Turnaround depends on the number of tapes and the service tier you choose. We'll send you a tracking link so you can follow the progress.

Do I need to send my Hi8 camcorder?

No. We have professional Hi8 playback equipment. Just send the tapes.

Do you return my original tapes?

Yes, we always return your originals. Once your digital files are ready, we ship your tapes back fully insured at no extra cost.

What's the difference between Digital Transfer and HD Restoration?

Digital Transfer captures your tape as-is in its original quality. HD Restoration goes further — we upscale the resolution, reduce noise and grain, and correct color shift so the footage looks closer to how you remember it.
